Our Generations of Success event on May 5, 2013 was a great success. Educators, volunteers, and community members came together to celebrate our work in a beautiful venue, and through this generosity, we exceeded our $30,000 goal! Having been recently asked to expand into more schools in Oakland and Berkeley, these funds are critical to our success, and the success of the children with whom we work.

Former California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin spoke at the event, emphasizing that Experience Corps provides exactly the type of intervention that brings positive options to children who often don’t have any; hope to those who haven’t known if before; and support to a challenged education system.

Experience Corps Bay Area works in 110 classrooms in San Francisco and Oakland, and throughout the year our 144 active volunteer members provide over 25,000 hours of mentoring and tutoring to 2522 students. It costs ECBA over $30,000 to provide support to each school we serve, an amount that our education partners cannot afford — donations from our supporters makes up for this lack.

david and small groupAs a result of funds raised from Generations of Success, we will be able to provide intervention to over 100 new students. When statistics show that children who read proficiently by the end of third grade are three times less likely to become a part of the juvenile justice system, having ECBA’s proven program in our schools does more than provide help to overburdened teachers. It provides kids that need it with a road to success, in school and in life.
